About Me

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and came to live in the U.S. in 2000. I moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 2006 and began my career as a journalist and writer.

As a multimedia journalist, I have covered the complexities of the child welfare system in Nebraska, survivors of a tornado in Joplin, Missouri, who turned their wreckage into art, the isolation of public housing residents in Chicago, and the funeral of Nelson Mandela in Qunu, South Africa. I have reported for National Public Radio, Public Radio International, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation. My print work has appeared in USA TODAY, Omaha Magazine and Business Day in Johannesburg, South Africa. I founded KVNO News in Omaha, Nebraska, where my work earned best writing, series and breaking news prizes from Public Radio News Directors Inc., First Place Eric Sevareid awards from the Northwest Broadcast News Association, and several local and regional awards from the Omaha Press Club, Nebraska Broadcasters Association and Great Plains Associated Press.

I have since transitioned into nonprofit work and am now a development writer at the University of Nebraska Foundation, where I write proposals and case statements to support the fundraising priorities of the University of Nebraska. I also write stories that will inspire people to support the work being done across the four campuses of the university — from fighting COVID-19 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to combatting domestic terrorism at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

I received my bachelor’s degree in journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and my master’s in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. I have an associate degree in motion picture and television production from Scottsdale Community College.

Occasionally, I write opinion pieces for DIS|PLACE, a periodic column formerly published in The Reader, and I am the co-host of a podcast on investing and living well. I am also, slowly, working on my first book about growing up in South Africa.
